Now and Then, Here and There

A boy stumbles into an alternate world where there is almost no water, and a mad dictator pummels the surviving population with his war machine, and isn’t much nicer to his own soldiers.
Slightly overrated, with the pot-boiler plot and annoyingly optimistic hero. But it looks great, and, because of the world and character detail, watching all at once feels like you’re reading a pretty good sf/fantasy novel.
